So I've been really bugged about something lately. I guess it shouldn't be something that bothers me so much, but it does bother me more than I expect. In terms of my job searching, I've had to totally rethink my last resort in jobs to apply for. I've thought if I really had to I would apply to work at a local bar or pub here in Rockford or Machesney Park. I just struggle with the idea because my ideal career is in youth ministry. My issue is do I try working in a bar until I can get a youth ministry job, and not have that affect my ability to work with youth, at least in the eyes of the congregation I would be at? Now I've had some friends that think it would be a great job, since I'm not an avid drinker, and it would be different. Others say that it doesn't seem like it should be a problem to work in a bar then work with youth in a church, since associate'preaching pastors do that and still get to work with the youth? I've even had a few friends say it would be best if I just forgot about the idea altogether. I decided I bring it to those of you who do look at this and let you help me figure it out.
I've also considered trying to work in radio doing a show for youth that brings messages to them in ways and terms that are easier for them to understand and feel compelled to go out and pass along to friends and other people they want to see come to Christ. I don't have radio experience, but I'd totally do what I could to learn and work my way up the line..or as Johnny Cash might say "Walk the Line".
If neither of these options work, then I'm out for department stores or restaurants until I can get the youth ministry job of my dreams, whether the ministry is in Minnesota, Colorado, Virginia, and other places that seem interesting to consider.
Well, those are just a few things I'm pondering. I'll try and update much sooner next time I have something come to mind, or that I want to write about.
Later!!

If your heart says not to do it, I wouldn't do it. I'm not sure what denonmination you are, but I know that some might be stricter than others in terms of your past life experiences.
Have you tried applying at temp. agencies to find a job doing something? (Obviously this would be a "last resort" too.) Just a suggestion.
I think if your dream is to do youth ministry, then you should stick with it and not do anything that could jeopardize your chance of doing what you want to do. That is just my opinion, and obviously you have to do something to eat, but I would think working at McDonald's might look better than working at O'Malleys (or any bar). The economy is bad, but is it bad enough to compromise your dreams and morals???
Again, this is just my opinion. . . Tell me what YOU think!
